01 // The Challenge

The Invisible River

Crossing the Tacoma Narrows by stand-up paddleboard (SUP) is constrained by non-uniform tidal currents, daylight boundaries, and the need to return safely across the same waterway. The route spans 2.6 nautical miles between the Gig Harbor Lighthouse (47.326° N) and Point Defiance (47.317° N).

Standard tide charts only measure vertical water height. But for a human on a paddleboard crossing perpendicular to the flow, what matters is horizontal kinetic energy. We rely on three specific NOAA harmonic prediction stations to monitor this: PUG1523 (Gig Harbor Entrance, 11 ft depth), PUG1526 (West Channel, 42 ft depth), and PUG1524 (Mid-Channel, 40 ft depth).

02 // The Logic

Deterministic Gating

The forecasting model acts as a rigorous filter. Its core safety policy intentionally favors false negatives over false positives. It does not attempt to maximize published opportunities; it reduces risk by isolating the rare intersections of time, tide, and daylight where passage is mathematically viable across the entire out-and-back trip envelope.

Transit Math

Assuming a moderate touring SUP speed of 3.0 knots, the 2.6 nm route takes 52 minutes of active paddling.

82-Minute Requirement

We add a 15-minute beach break at Point Defiance and a 15-minute safety buffer, creating a hard 82-minute required crossing window.

Slack Clustering

Because slack water arrives at slightly different times across the three stations, the model centers the window on a median clustered slack time.

Strict 1.5 Knot Cap

The cross-current cannot exceed 1.5 knots. If a single minute of the 82-minute window exceeds this at any of the three stations, it is rejected.

Live Forecast

Scientific data is only useful if it's easy to read on the beach. The system produces a definitive "go/no-go" daily forecast showing exactly when to leave and when to return.
